Helping a lady friend...its a chrysler
Hey I am trying to help out a friend of mine. Her 193 chrysler lebaron just crapped out at a 150,xxx miles in a walmart parking lot. I am pretty sure it has something to do with the transmission because the engine runs fine but as she was trying to pull out there was a loud noise and the car rolled to a stop. I havent been able to get under the car because of the snow storm right now, but here are pictures of the piece that we found on the ground. If anyone has any idea what it is or where it came from that would be great...by the way it is broken in half, who knows where the other half is.
I know it really doesnt look good. It is covered in some pretty nasty black oil and definitely does not look like it should be a part that can fall off.

its hard to find anything in that parking lot with all the snow we have been getting. It has been snowing almost an inch and hour and it happened almost 10 hours ago. Would this also cause the steering wheel to shake before it happened? She told me that it was shaking on the way to walmart but stopped right before she got there.

I agree with the others above... thats the bearing cage for a CV axle joint (Constant Velocity).
There are two joints per shaft and two shafts on the LeBaron of which you speak. There's a driver side and passenger side. The 'gunk' you refer to was probably a combination of molybdenum grease and road grime. Usually what happens is the CV boot that surrounds the joint gets a hole... grease gets slung out... hole turns in to a tear... grit gets in... eventual failure. There tends to be more steering shake if the outboard CV joint/bearing goes bad as opposed to the inboard joint/bearing.
Start calling around for replacement CV axle assembly for her ride. Prices will vary considerably so spend the time calling. Besides, most wont have the assembly in stock so it will have to be ordered.
Just my experience... hope it helps.

yes sir...im about 98 percent sure thats what failed is the cv joint... you will need the old one for a core and you will need to know if it has anti lock brakes or not... there around 110 bucks... but you will get around 60 back with the core
