Default What is this? Air deflector? Is it necessary?

What is the plastic looking piece with the arrow pointed to it in the picture? Is it an Air Deflector? What does it do exactly? I know, I know "Deflect air". But what does deflecting air do for the truck? What would removing it do? Thanks.

It's supposed to help with gas mileage. Lots of members here have removed it, most say they don't notice a loss of mpg. I'm probably going to take mine off soon. The owners manual even mentions removing it for off roading, so it won't hurt anything to remove it.

removing it unlocks the search feature on this forum

seriously, it's been talked about for 4 years now, with the same conclusion: if you go offroad, lift your truck, or just dont like it, remove it and move on. No adverse effects one way or the other, none measurable anyway.

Thanks flyinpig14.

ecopat, I figured someone would give me crap about that. I did try, haha. But I guess I'm not very good with the search yet. Wasn't sure what to search for. And when I did seem to find something, there were 300+ pages in that thread and I couldn't find what I wanted. I did go back and try again and found a few posts.

tanked_darren, how did you remove it with only 2 nuts? When I DID finally do a decent search, I'm seeing posts saying that taking it off leaves hanging clips and 20 bolt holes.

on the 13-14 it was litterally 5 minutes, 2 bolts. or go offroad in some soft, mushy crap, get the front end stuck enough, and back up one good time, that's how I remove both the deflector and the "skid plate" on my '11

for future searches, just google: site:f150forum.com Your search here

way, way better and easier to navigate than the forum search.

Lightbulb

ChrisJr ...
Suggestion: Put your vehicle information (year, cab type, trim, engine, wheelbase, _x4 drive, etc.) in your sig' -OR- provide it in your posting(s).
.

While the deflector/spoiler was introduced on the 2010 F-150s to aid aerodynamics, it's shape was changed in 2011.

And it was refined for the gen'13 redesign.

NOTE: You'll find posting in the appropriate
< year of the F-150 >
section more helpful/appropriate than General F150 Discussion posts.
