Just bought a 2019 and I too have the problem with trying to connect my iPhone XR to be able to charge it. Never had this happen before with any other newer vehicles that I have purchased in the last 10 or so years. Took it to my Ford dealer and they replaced the hub and the cable to no success. I have been to the dealership 4 times to try and correct this problem. Not sure what to do at this point but maybe contact ford as my dash has been apart several times now. How many times can it be removed and re-snapped in before my dash is a rattle trap?

Had the same issue a few weeks ago on my '18 and iPhone 8. Turned off WIFI and it would charge. I ended up getting a 12V USB charger for the next time.

I have to use a 2:1 USB cable on my laptops with my
external drive. One USB on its own wasn’t enough to power it. This may or may not work or apply here.

On the subject of USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. Ford is probably not using a USB 3.0 hub on their Sync systems because it means adding hardware and software drivers to the system to support it, plus a possible license for the hardware. In other words, Ford is being cheap and using USB 2.0 so they don't have to pay extra for the hardware and possible license

Well, the dealer replace the APIM and now it is intermittent. Sometimes it works, sometimes I get the error message. Pretty ridiculous considering it's a 2019 and can't charge my phone with any consistency. I think I will eventually rip the SYNC system out and just replace it with an aftermarket deck. SYNC stinks....
