Truck registered as commercial in California
Hi all,
I tried searching the web for a while, and I got some information, however it was pretty old. I am not sure if there is anything newer out there. Here is my situation/problem/question. I have a 2014 STX SCrew and I live in California, I received my pink slip a few days ago and realized it is registered as commercial. In my research it looks like this might be correct here, however, in trying to not pay so much for the registration when it comes due... is there a way to switch it out of being listed as commercial? any help or info or links to info would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

If the rules out there are anything like Florida, it's listed as commercial not due to its intended use, but due to the weight of the truck. I ran into the same thing with my truck. It was about double the price to register it versus a car and I had to renew the registration on or before December 31st, rather than my birthday (as it is with cars here). It was unfortunate as I bought the truck 3 weeks after renewing the registration on my trade in, only to have to renew again 4 months later.

Hmm thats odd...
I have a 2010 SCrew and transferred it from out of state into CA (what a mess that was). Part of the transfer required getting the truck weighed and if I recall correctly, it was around 5500 lbs.
Registration was normal and not commercial. I think I paid around $300

Is it titled in the name of a business or private owner?

Like Viking said, its probably like it is here in Florida, and its based on weight. I did a quick Google and there were some mumblings about if you were to mount a permanent bed cap, it would make it not commercial. Not living in CA, i cant say for sure.

California just lists all full size pick up trucks as commercial whether used for work or pleasure and as far as I know there is no way of getting around it, unless you install a bathroom with shower and bed in it, portapotty doesn't count.
Most likely it is just their way of getting extra money from the citizens.

I don't know what your physical status is, but you can always circumvent by getting handicap plates like I did. DMV won't argue that point at all. They just send you a letter stating that you just can't use the vehicle for a business.
