Default Tranny difference in 4.6 versus 5.4

Hello all,

I bought a 05 F150 5.4 4WD about two months ago. I have never owned a Ford before, but I love this truck. I do have a question about the tranny. Is there a difference between the 5.4 tranny and the 4.6 tranny? I have driven both, but my truck feels somewhat more sluggish versus the 4.6. My truck definitely feels more powerful once it gets going, but I guess I am saying taht the 4.6 feels a little more "peppy". I have read that Ford did some changes with the tranny in the 5.4's which made the transmission "think" and choose exactly where it needs to be in regards to torque. Does any of this make any sense to anyone?? My 3 month warranty expires in 3 weeks and if something is not right, then I want to know. I have asked the dealer, but you know how that goes. They just say that if I don't have a trouble light- don't worry about it. THANKS!!!

Im curious about this myself. Although it is possible the 4.6 you drove may have had shorter gearing in it, which would help with initial off the line "pep".

4.6L got the 4R70W, 5.4L got the 4R75E(W). The 5.4L's trans is built a little stronger and has a higher torque input rating.

4 as in 4 speeds or gears
R rear wheel drive
70 or 75 as in A70 type or A74 type, denotes Automatic and torque capacity.
W denotes wide ratio, E denotes electronic, although the 4R75E is still wide ratio.

Thanks for the info regarding the tranny specs. Does my dilema make sense to you then? Would the 5.4 seem a little more sluggish from a dead stop? My 5.4 takes off at an even smooth pace evn if I get on the pedal. The 4.6 seems to be a little more responsive and peppy.

its just the EEC tuning, get a custom tuned Xcal3 and the 5.4 will scream.

I'm not sure if I am ready for that mod quite yet. I am needing a leveling kit and some new tires, but I will definitely keep that on my list. My main thing was to know that my tranny is ok. Thanks again for the info. Very helpful.
