Check the sticker on the driver's side door frame. It lists your trucks payload on it. Mine is 1800# with max tow 3.55 FX4.

Iam curious about my actual tongue weight, might have to buy a scale
hah, not with a platinum it's not 2000lbs.
My XL STX is 1940lbs, but I don't have near the doodads and gizmos yours has.

Yellow door sticker on your driver's door. Check it out.

My Xlt has a max possible payload of 2050lbs. Door sticker is 1802lbs. It has a tailgate step and a few accessories that eat up the 248lb difference. A loaded platinum has a significantly lower number on the door sticker.

Read this, https://www.f150forum.com/f82/number...9/#post5446734

Do what is listed in there to determine if your truck is within specs.

Replace those rear shocks, they are at least 90% of your problems provided the hitch is dead on. My 16 still has a problem with kicking the trailer around at times on a rough road, but hoping the Sumosprings resolves that last bit.

i did put the bilstiens in and it improved but still not as good as my older fx

Your right the door sticker says 1548. So in theory im at my limit, however my original argument is the same. My old 2012 fx4 still towed better without bilstiens and air shocks. The fx had every feature that a platinum of the past had. I even added aftermarket power steps. The only feature I can think the old fx4 didnt have was the plastic platinum emblem on the back tailgate. In addition the fx4 had skidplates so it probably was even heavier than than the standard platinum counterpart. I cant check what my load rating was since i sold the truck but my buddies 2014 platinum door sticker says 1568 so i assume its the same.

While this doesnt make it safe to overload the rear, im running air bags which helps stiffen up the rear end , along with the bilstiens in the rear it should be at least equivalent to my old fx-4. Their must be something about the new truck frame or other engineering that is going on causing the trailer to be poor.

maybe i need new front shocks as well?

Hey....I'm not saying it's not capable of doing what you want. I'm just saying you're at/could be over the specified limits of the truck.

If something were to happen and somebody were to get hurt, it could expose you to a problem, that's all.

Given your very close to the payload on my 502a Lariat, I would say that the issues you have, is the truck.

I had a 2014 RWD 501a Lariat, and with everything pretty much the same other than package option and driveline, the 2014 did tow my trailer much better than my 16, with only a 1470# payload.

Don't feel bad, your not the only one who isn't liking how the new trucks tow.

thanks everyone for your comments. in the end its good to hear that im not the only one who has noticed the towing issues on the new chassis. I suppose im hoping to understand the why so that i can determine if there is anything more i can do about it. My working theories are this. With the truck being 700lbs lighter than the previous generation, general physics would say the same weight trailer is going to have a larger effect on a lighter vehicle moving down the road (starting-stopping, bumps, wind etc.). The second is that i assume the springs, shocks and frame are lighter duty (otherwise the truck would ride very after rough shedding 700 lbs on the same frame) causing the same heavy trailer load to have greater effect when trailer than previous trucks. Finally is the frame lighter duty than previous causing more twisting when loaded pulling heavy trailers.

I think if you replaced the rear shocks with Bilsteins and went to a little heavier rated tire (such as a load range E), you would be amazed.
