Default Tow Dolly

I have a dumb question that I'm sure someone here has the answer to. When you use a tow dolly, is the steering wheel locked on the car on the dolly(is the key in the lock position?)

Depends on the dolly
Most require it be unlocked but some have steerable
Wheels so it is not required to keep the steering unlocked

This dolly does not have steerable wheels.....I didn't know there was such a thing.
Edit: so your answer is ...It should be unlocked...?

I rented a tow dolly from U-Haul today, first time I ever used one. Their instruction book said steering wheel on tow vehicle must be in the lock position. The dolly that I rented had a pivoting platform. My guess would be if the dolly doesn't have a pivoting platform you would leave the steering unlocked.

do you always tow forward with those? And with RWD vehicles do you have to remove the rear driveshaft? Tow it backwards?

You tow with the bulk of the weight on the dolly, which usually means towing forward. The driveshaft would need pulled for RWD / AWD. In those cases I'd spend the extra $10 and rent an auto transport over a tow dolly.

Years ago I towed my Chevy Lumina FWD with the steering wheel locked. "uhaul tow dolly" By the time I got to my destination I had a permanently unlocked steering wheel. Follow the directions on the dolly, they have to supply you with them.

Interesting. Years ago I towed a ford ranger but I dont remember if the top of the dolly pivoted, I assume not, but I had the steering locked and had no issues, but I agree, follow the directions, im sure it has them!
