Depends on what you use the truck for I guess. I have had caps, soft covers, hard covers and on my last two tool boxes of the over the rail type. I prefer the tool box now but I have to have my bed as open as possible towing a gooseneck and hauling feed and bedding a lot.

Take a look at diamondback.com..... I have been a weathergard box guy for 20 years, always a new box when I got a new truck but the last box I bought had terrible welds and tore a hinge strut off within a few months.... Found Diamondback, purchased the HD cover with the stainless crossover box... best purchase for a work truck ever.

zombie thread.
I currently have a toolbox & headache rack but I'm debating on selling those and picking up a retractable tonneau cover (and carrying stuff in totes in the bed)
I just cant decide.....

I heard these are weak and break easily, what do you think of the quality? I just need to store my compact mobile air compressor and a couple different hitches, to cheap to buy the $700 one.

The bed is easy to break into unless you have a Diamondback tonneau and lock everything, then it's less easy.

Plastic boxes and swings are always going to be pretty easy to break into as well.

Seems to me that valuable stuff not protected enough by a swingcase (and also concealed under the tonneau) should be able to fit in the cab.

I have been going back and forth over that very solution. I have a soft roll up style tonneau so it should work just fine. Only thing is the boxes would block the bed lights and it's the only reason I haven't pulled the trigger on a pair of those. Quick question: how do they isolate the aluminium bed (pretty sure the bolts are steel)? Galvanized bolts? or do they provide a means to isolate them?

A lot of people get the passenger side only to avoid covering the box lighting button that's on the driver side, which also means not covering the driver side light, still works

Default Combo toolbox and tonneau cover

Check out the new Unruli system. It's a toolbox along with a tonneau cover that allows easy access to the box by extending out over the tailgate. Its also super easy to take out if you need the whole truck bed.
