If it was the 5.0 and 10 Spd, it probably needed to relearn the strategy, or it is possible the truck sat long enough to drain the battery which can also reset the PCM and have to relearn. It takes time and some miles before it will start to shift properly too. I think though you will be quite pleased with either engine, and disregard the nay sayers who have no clue what the longevity is. I have had 6 3.5 EB and none ever gave me an issues, even in my current POS I have now, it's the only thing that actually works well.

My average over 33k was 13.9. Son in law has a 2016 5.0 with the 3.31. He gets 22 on trips. I think one problem for me was my truck had 3.73 rear. I didn't think about that when I bought. It comes down to what are your priorities. Mine is mpg in a f150. Please don't shoot back with "get a vw". I need a truck, too. Good luck getting what you want.
with 3.55’s i get 15-16 city and 23 highway. 4wd

Ruby, that's encouraging. I see you are south Jersey. That is flat compared to my area. From what you have said, I should get 20mpg on highway, I would be happy with that. My 3.5 eco only gave 13 plus over life of car with me. I think the issue was 3.73 rear.

Going off topic but how many miles are on your old 23 year old truck? That's great service. What engine was in it and what has been replaced. You're going to miss your old friend.

Well for the age of it, it really doesnt have alot of miles on it. 105,000. Its a Dodge 1500 with the 5.2L V8. Regular cab, 2wd, 8 foot bed, automatic. I bought it off my grandfather with 37,000 miles. Ive done brakes, front wheel bearings, headliner, just replaced the plenum gasket underneath the intake manifold, plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Oh and my dash just finally cracked. Other than that no issues. Besides the paint peeling and total lack of power, it drives like new. Before the plenum fix, it was getting me 7mpg and burning oil like crazy. Now I'm back up to 11-13 mpg. My 1994 Dodge 2500 12v diesel has 120,000. Thats a 4x4 5 speed. 20mpg. Sits in the winter.

When looking more into the F150, now I am debating on what axle ratio. Definitely dont want the 3.31. With my research I see 7th gear in the 10 speed is direct drive and the others above are all OD. Road trips would be few and far between, and I dont drive over 69 mph on the highway. So maybe 3.73 would be ideal for me especially with the occasional boat haul and car trailer hauling my old jeep.

That 318 was a great engine. My BIL has a 98 1500 with over 200,000 on it and it's basically been trouble free.

My cousin had a '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 318 engine that never gave him any trouble. The engine and transmission were rock solid the rest of the Jeep not so much. Differential, transfer case, locks, wipers and many other things were replaced, some twice or three times.
