Test drove today

After another break down on my 23 year old truck, my fiance drove me straight to the ford dealer. I had a 2012 F150 a while back when I worked for one company and I loved it.

Today I saw they had a plane jane 2018 extended cab XL with crank windows. I was shocked the rear windows didnt go down at all. It was a 5.0 with the 10 speed. I was not impressed with the way it drove. As the engine lugged under acceleration, the transmission jumped and thudded and felt terrible. I drove it back and talked numbers with the guy since the selling price was 33,000.

He convinced me to try out a XLT that had more rebates and was the 2.7 ecoboost. While I am afraid of the complex-ness of the ecoboost I have to admit it did drive extremely smooth and was comfortable. What I see online, people are really happy with the fuel economy. I plan on keeping the truck, well, forever if I can. Hence, my 23 year old dodge.

We talked numbers again. With $15,000 down, he would finance at 2.69% for 48 months. Market value was $43.895, selling price $35.690. After all the fees, $38,276. I got them to install running boards for "no charge". I have never owned a new truck myself but have been sort of wanting one for a while. Seems silly, absolutely zero return on investment. What do you all think of that price? 3.55 rear end, 4x4, vinyl floors, suicide doors, plenty of options.

2.69 seems a little steep considering the DP and term, but the price seems ball-park.

If you plan on keeping the truck for a long time you should seriously consider the 5.0 for reliability in my honest opinion. I don't know what size engine your 23 year old Dodge had, but I bet it was larger than 165 cu.in.

Yeah I was really leaning for the 5.0 too. I dont understand why the transmission felt so bad in the one I drove. It was shifting constantly as it was lugging. The salesman said it needed to "learn my driving habits." But yet the 2.7 with the same mileage (~30 miles) was silky smooth.

There is no hesitation or debate the 5.0 is the way to go according to the techs I have talked to for long term reliability. I'm sure the Eco's are fine engines, although I think the 2.7 is kind of small for a full size truck, especially a supercrew., might be ok in a RCSB.

A 10 speed trans is gonna hunt around a lot to find the right gear. They are new transmissions so just takes some getting used to. I bought a 2013 5.0, but while in the shop had a 2018 loaner 2.7 to drive and in sport mode that thing puts a smile on your face. All in all I'm 99.9% a V8 guy though. I would say if you are putting 15k down you should qualify for some kind of 0% financing.......

What rearend gearing was the 5.0 ?
