My folks had one in our '55 Chevy wagon and I cracked my thumb good once. I wouldn't have one now.

I used one after I wrecked my motorcycle. Broken right collar bone and left thumb. I couldn't turn the wheel fast enough with half a hand.

I remember that back in Indiana one of the reasons they outlawed them is because a teen girl hit her face on one and died. Ive only had one and that was on my 69 Super Bee.There were so many other ways to die in that car that the **** was the least of my worries.

They do make turning and backing out easier. They are not illegal. You can see the laws for your state at http://www.suicideknob.net. I would get a metal one though. A plastic one could break when turning and then that would be bad.
