stutter

2001 F150, 5.4v8, 2WD
I have a terrible & consistent "stutter" at 1100-2000 RPM (~50mph)
I can accelerate out of the stutter
No check-engine light=no code
Tach doesn't bounce around during the stutter
Mechanic says it's (probably) not transmission
one guy says plugs/coils...another says "no" if there is no RPM fluctuation
Cleaned intake/fuel system, installed new EGR solenoid, replaced pcv....no help
I'll do whatever, but hate to throw money at the wrong thing

Any similar experiences? What am I missing? THANK YOU for any advice/help

How many miles?
Have plugs ever been changed before?

madelay 05-31-2017 02:15 PM

Sir- Thanks for the note. 200K on truck. Maybe 50K miles since plugs/coils were changed

I would start with some fresh motorcraft plugs and boots and springs

Thank you, sir

I am very grateful for your input in trying to remedy my stutter.

We changed plugs/boots/springs. Ran well for 50 miles...then stutter has returned.
Clearly more prevalent when engine is hot & in stop/go traffic (on acceleration)

My '88 Mustang GT had a similar stutter. We found the fuel pump to be bad...but I had fuel pump in truck replaced in 2016, so that "shouldn't" be to blame

Gonna change O2 sensors & fuel filter (cheap, so why not, eh?)
Could it be cat converter?

Any other ideas? Thanks for letting me ask....

thinking Coil.. what brand are they.. ?

madelay 06-21-2017 10:40 AM

Thanks. Brand new set of Duralast coils.
Exact same stutter as before the change, so it wouldn't seem likely one of the new ones is bad or installed improperly (plz correct me if I'm wrong)

techrep 06-21-2017 10:45 AM

Sorry ... you did not say you replaced coils in your last post... plug/boots/springs is all I saw... no coolant leaks ?

madelay 06-21-2017 10:57 AM

my error. Yes, coils changed too.
No coolant leaks. No temp spikes/changes. Changed thermostat w/in the past year, also
