Steering wheel getting kind of stiff
Hello,
My F150 is closed to 300 000 km (185 000 mi). My steering wheel is getting harder to turn. I still can drive without any problem but we can feel it is getting kind of stiffer than usual. Does anyone have seen this problem? I never had a vehicle reached that much mileage and I wonder if the steering fluid may thicken similarly to engine's oil.
Any idea about this?
Thanks

Year, engine, model, trim level, 2 or 4wd, the more info you provide the faster you will receive a response that might be helpful.

Check the steering shaft where it comes out of the firewall and connects to the rack-n-pinion, there are two mini u-joints 1 at each end, saturate them with penetrating oil and let sit over night, next day saturate them again but use a silicone based spray lube. Let soak in while rotating the steering wheel back and forth stop to stop several times.
Take it for a drive and give it a day or so, if those joints are binding that should loosen them up.

I had a steering issue with my '09 FX4 crew cab at around the 6 or 7 year mark. It started feeling tight - then it would actually bind up when making turns. Turned out to be the U-joints in the intermediate steering shaft. This shaft is in the engine compartment coming from the firewall downward - easy to see but hard to diagnose with it attached.
It had become a dangerous situation. I had a lot of rust issues with this truck (winter road salt) and this was one of them.
I was kind of mad - the same shaft was used in the Crown Vics for which they had a recall for - but not the F-150.

The u-joints on the steering shaft on mine also needed to be replaced, just prior to my purchasing the truck.
