Spare tire different size than other 4 tires

I lower my spare every spring and fall to be sure it's ready if & when it's needed. Give the tire & wheel a good cleaning, check the tire pressure and also clean & lube the cable. Thirty minutes easy work twice a year is worth it to know everything is good.
I was having this very same conversation with a neighbor one day and asked him how he maintains his spare.
He replied that he didn't know if he even had a spare and if so he asked me where he'd find it. He's had the truck for 11 years plus 2 other vehicles and he has no clue where any of the spares are or even if they have air in them.

Related to this - I just upgraded to a ‘15 Lariat that I bought used. After getting it home I went over the entire truck. One of the things I did is to make sure everything was in the tool kit and drop the spare and check it. While doing this I took the lug wrench and made sure it fit the lug nuts. Well guess what - it wouldn’t fit 80% of them - swelled lug nuts which is a common feature on Ford trucks in the rust belt.
Ordered a set of new Gorilla lug nuts right then.

I just purchased a 2018 F-150, and discovered the spare is a different size than the other 4. The four tires are Hankook 275/55R20, and the spare is a Wrangler 255/70R18. I called the dealer's Service Dept. and was told all new Fords ship this way. Could someone please confirm if this is in fact the truth? It seems to me having one tire a different size in the event I got a flat, would make for an awkward ride.
Thanks,
George

Be glad it's not a Dodge. We have a fleet of Promasters and those things don't have a spare at all, they have a 12v tire inflator with a chamber full of fix-a-flat that spews out as soon as you connect it. Talk about a fubar mess. Sure as hell won't do any good if you pop a tire.

Most car makers depending on model are going to the no spare thing thanks to CAFE standards and cost savings.

Be glad Ford does not put run-flat tires like my Audi Q7. After using the goop and included compressor, the tire now needs to be replaced.
