Default PATS Key Question

Stupid Question Time! How come I couldn't take the chip out of the key and JB Weld it somewhere near the ignition? Then just have a regular key made to start my truck.

Key chip is permanently encased but you can cut the key shank off and tape the head to the receiver antenna inside the column, then you could use any key cut for the lock, but why? You would be defeating a good security measure to keep others from stealing the vehicle.

You can always have the one key you have cloned, that's what they do at locksmiths. Not sure how much it cost but probably cheaper than the dealer, keep in mind the cloned keys are just that, they will work but if in the future you need to have two programmed keys you will still have to have another programmed by the dealer or independent tech such as my self.

My Ford dealer will do it for $80. Could I use that key and my original key to program a third key?

Yes, once you have 2 programmed keys (not 1 cloned) then you can program a few more keys, I think 6 is max.

You put the 1st key in turn to run (not start) and let the gauges prove out (about 3 seconds) remove it and put the 2nd programmed key in and wait 3, then insert an un-programmed key in wait 3 and turn off, now wait about 10 secs and all 3 keys should start the truck. Repeat for other un-programmed key(s).

A $20 little black box from Painless Wiring was all I needed to rid my GM of the VATS system.
