Default Soft Tonneau cover problems with wind

I've got a 2010 F150 Lariat and have put 2 different soft covers on this truck, both of which ended up with the same problem. At first, I thought the Truxedo I picked up had a defective seal near the cab. Took a long trip with the truck and the wind nearly tore the thing off. So, I returned the product and purchased a cheaper model on eBay with the tuck and roll system on the bed rails. It seems to fit much like the Truxedo, but I am still getting some serious air leakage near the cab. When driving down the road at highway speeds, with no wind, the cover flops around a bunch. I looked and found that the seal is touching the front bulkhead of the bed, so I sealed it with silicone caulk just to be sure. Same issue.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Yes. Get an Access cover. I've installed a couple hundred of them over the years with no issue. Great product.

I've often wondered why folks buy anything else.

Not exactly the answer I was looking for... I was looking for suggestions for my current problem. Thoughts?

I bought a TonnoPro cover, and although it ripples a little bit in the wind, it's not a problem. When I researched covers, it looks like most of them are designed similarly, with clamps that hold the cover on with some kind of aluminum frame.

The TonnoPro was one of the more inexpensive options, and it works well and looks good.

I imagine you're looking for an idea that's not just replacing what you have, so sorry about that ....

web_thug:

It sounds like the problem isn't the seal at the front, but the cover's tightness.

I don't know which brand of cover you have, but you need to look at whether your cover has a tightening mechanism. Look where the cover/front bar attaches to the rails. Is there any way to adjust how tight the cover is?

No matter which manufacturer you get a soft cover from, you need to keep it tight like a drum. If it's loose, it will flap in the wind even if you have it sealed perfectly -- and that flapping wears the cover out prematurely.

You must've installed it incorrectly. Have a truxedo on our 2011 no issues what so ever. You should be able to flick it an it sounds like a drum

This is actually exactly what I was going to post. I bought a used truck with a tonneau already on it. I drove it around for a few days and I noticed the cover was flapping. I noticed a light drumming thumping noise and I had no idea what it was coming from but narrowed it down to my cover. I looked up the manufacteur's manual and found that there is a retention tightness easy dial thing, basically you hand twist it and it loosens/tightens the cover. I can see the threads from where I started and was able to hand tighten it all basically DOUBLE the tightness it was before and now it's super taut and while it still moves (its a layer of soft leather afterall, it won't ever be completely rigid), it NO LONGER makes the noise. Also when I go to clip the end of the tonneau cover at the tailgate I can easily tell the difference in how taut it is now.

I would definitely check the retention tightening thing if I were you, mine was located near the cab of my truck.

That is the one I have, and if you look at the interactive picture thing hover over #2, thats the tension dial I'm talking about.

I had the flapping issue too, the tension dial fixed the noise and visually seeing the cover flapping issue
