Default Should I sell this truck????

First of all, I am a newbie to this site and a first time F150 owner.

Three days ago I purchased a very clean one owner F150 FX4 with 31,500 miles on the clock. I went out looking for a GMC or Chevy, but this truck is really nice so I took a leap of faith and jumped to the blue oval. I am a long time Chevy owner (I have owned four Tahoes all with over 200k on the clock at sell point with no major issues at all.)

Now I am questioning my decision to purchase this truck as I have just spent the last couple of hours learning about the cam phasor issue with the 5.4 Triton motor.

This is not a Chevy vs Ford post and I am not a troll. I REALLY like this truck but I am blown away by this cam phasor thing.

Should I just turn around and sell it now before the (apparently) inevitable tick....knock.....boom experience or is there anyone out there who had a high milage 5.4 that has avoided this issue.

Thanks for any advice.

Loads of people have high mileage 5.4s.

The 5.4 ticks, and it's normal.

Cam phaser issue is a hit and miss.. Some do it some don't.... But don't always automatically you have an issue.... You'll know you have an issue when your truck sounds like a diesel...

Ticking noise.... Fuel injectors... Mine tick... That's normal.... Enjoy your truck

I notice the same thing. its always a gamble I guess. I like fords ( i like the gm & dodges too), but for a 1/2 ton in the year range I bought I had to have the ford. More power/payload (and a 6.5 bed with crew for me, others I'd be stuck with a shorter or FAR shorter bed to get a larger interior) but slightly less mpg by 1-2. After putting an evo in (transmission firmness/adj. was worth it, not sure if I really like the pwr settings yet-kinda jumpy) I'm pretty happy with it so far. It ticks a little but after putting the Magnaflow SI/SO under it I can't hear it unless I'm standing outside next to it. The low end tq on the 5.4 was also a big seller on what I purchased over the 5.3. I think you'll like it. And hell, you only have a thousand miles on it more than the one I picked up and we will probly both sell them before they ever have a problem with the phasers. My old mans '06 lariat 5.4 has 90k on it and it gets worked hard all the time. With 60k less, I'm not worried at all and his still sounds the same as mine.

Thanks guys for the replies.

I understand that the cam phasor is a "hit and miss" issure.....but it is a big gamble / risk in my book. Is there anything that can be done proactively to prevent this problem? Did Ford ever come up with a fix or do they just replace the exact same phasor design / part if / when the truck is repaired?

Thanks again.

Well, I've been on this forum for almost a year now and this if the first that I have heard of the cam phasor issue, so I think you have to be pretty unlucky to get it. My 5.4 has 85k and is running fine, along with so many others on here.

P.S. All brands of trucks have their issues. Search the forums and you will find complaints on each and every model. Machines break with use.

I believe the cam phasor issue is on the 04+ 3v trucks only.

I did not know they changed the 5.4 design.

ya they switched to a 3v DOHC in 2004 for f150s.

It may seem that a lot of people have this cam phaser problem based on the posts in the 04-08 section, but you also have to realize that most people that join the forum joined because they have a problem. Most people that are happy with their trucks don't join the forum because they have no problems with theirs.
