Second key

I'm sure this has been covered before but I'm not getting anything with a search. I just bought a 13 lariat. They didn't tell me they only had one key until after the papers were signed. So wheres the best place to get the key/fob with remote start? The dealer said there was an online place then you could get the key flashed at a ford dealer but I don't remember the name.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got a key flashed at Walmart. Try there.

Only a dealer or locksmith can create a 2nd key. You can clone a key, but that is just an identical key.

If I don't use the memory function would a cloned key do the remote start and everything else?

I work at a dealer, not for Ford, but when we sell a used car and it's new enough we usually supply a 2nd key. Not sure if it's regulations on that, the year of the car, if it's a certified preowned car or exactly what. I'd check with that dealer, and walk in like you know you are owed a 2nd key. Sounds like you've tipped your hand for that play though.

It should.

Thanks everyone. I went by walmart, they wouldn't even grind me a blank to open the door. No luck at autozone either. I'll go to the local locksmith tomorrow.

Fueler, They didn't tell me they only had one key until I was on my out the door and the paperwork was signed. It's a 2013. I still have some power over the deal if the locksmith wants a fortune or can't do it.I could probably force the dealer into it. Not sure it's worth the hassle though.

Thanks again

The locksmith will cut the blank for maybe $5, but can't program. As mentioned previously with only one key the dealer has to program the second key. I would see if the seller will spring for the second key, $150-200 at the ford dealer.

Once you have two keys order a third online and cut at the locksmith so that when you lose one you can program a replacement yourself. I just ordered two blanks from amazon for $17 apiece.

Some locksmiths CAN program keys.

"when you lose one you can program a replacement yourself" is not correct. You need to take that third key and program it WHILE you have the other two, before you lose one of them. ;)

For what it is worth,
My bride purchased for me in December a factory remote start plus two extra keys. The keys were required because my originals do not have the remote start button.

The local hardware store would not cut the two new keys. A local lock smith cut both keys for a total of 11 bucks.

I followed the instructions on programming the keys. I had two originals and the two new keys in hand. Easy and successful on the first try. I now have 4 functioning keys for my 2013 XLT. Two with remote start and two without.

I did however take the truck to the dealer to have the remote start activated. They surely recognized I had no KY and really stuck it to me price wise.

I paid the painful price. However I have fully functioning remote start and all the menu options for auto defrost, auto air, etc.

Hope that helps.
Scott
