granted the 3.5L kind of ranks higher than that 5L

OP and JCR, this always leads to a big, usually nasty debate, winds up with nothing gained. Hence the negativity.

Neither are an all around "better." Both have pros and cons. You need to weigh those individually. A "which is better thread" will only get you barking about who like their truck more.

If it was me I would ask myself what task I would be utilizing the truck. If it is mostly cruising on the highway with minimal towing I would lean toward the 3.5 or 2.7L ecoboost for better mpg.
If the truck would be used for mostly hauling and loading I would opt for more cylinders. Basically if my mpg is going to suck no matter what (hauling, towing) then I want less work on the engine. No replacement for displacement.
Since I can't afford neither I don't have to make this decision.

I don't haul much now but at the same time I'm looking into the future that I may need to be hauling heavy, which would mean maxing out the F150.
The 3.5 V6 EcoBoost is your only option if you order and/or purchase a truck with the Max Tow package. Otherwise, at least through 2017, the Tow Package with the 5.0 gave you a maximum 9000 lbs trailer weight tow capacity rating.
Do you need a 3/4 ton instead?

yes the 3.5L V6 has more power for towing vs 5L V8
though at the same time hearing the 5L V8 will get better gas mileage on average, though only rated for about 1000 lbs less for tow, granted that's still a lot of weight to consider IMO
so far I;'m leaning towards the 3.55 axle
At the same time you can find & buy a 5L V8 easier & about $2-5K cheaper than the 3.5LV6.
supply/demand = $$
people want the 3.5L because of talk, so the 5L V8 is more available & at a cheaper price, maybe with even more better options too.

I only consider performance, not dragging, er, towing swaying tail dragging.
If you have any inkling of actually towing, with a truck that will handle nicely with a decent load, get a Super Dude right from the start. IMO, no 1/2 ton is worth a crap as a meaningful TOW vehicles. People do justify the 150 due to the, again IMO, inflated ratings.
Yes, I've had the 5.0, 3.5TT, in a 150, and a couple 7.3, and one gas F250HD. No comparison to the SD's.

How heavy ?
A lot of weight ! serious cleaning up of a hoarder that consists of many metal items including vehicle's, forklifts,backhoe's,skidloader's,more less JUNK ! , etc...
though the skid loaders are good & worth keeping.
I may be able to get a F350 running from the "items" & turn it into a 5th wheel truck, if it all works out.
other than that I'm left with the F-150, which would you choose ?

3.5 TT for towing/hauling.
If you want a serious tow vehicle, the Ford Guide say to get the XL Screw LB 4x2 with the 3.5 and Max tow package and you have 13,200# towing. This is the ONLY optioned truck to have it. No other options, just XL base with Max Tow.
If you are hauling, and NOT towing, then you will want an XL Regular cab 4x2 with the 5.0 and 8 foot bed with HDPP for 3270 pounds of payload.
Just keep in mind that every option added reduces the payload and towing capacity significantly. Adding 4WD will reduce it by several hundred pounds alone.
The above is NOT opinion, it is pure fact. This really is the only way to look at it.
Now if you want opinion, towing with a 3.5 is hands down better than the 5.0 when climbing a mountain, but costs you in fuel economy. It's also easier on the ears. <- purely opinion since I have never towed with a 5.0 where the 5.0 guys will tell you the 5.0 is better and have never towed with the 3.5 up a mountain. < This is based on fact and speculation, sorry could not help it.
