Default Sacrilege...maybe

2010 FX4 w/ 39K miles on the odo and 5.4l engine. I love the truck. We pull the boat with it. My Son, who also loves the truck, wants to buy it allowing me to buy a new truck. My FX4 in Nov of 2009 when I bought it was $28K. Looking at the comparable truck now is $38K. Looking at a 2013 model with very few changes. Sure an Ecoboost with twin turbos (expensive to fix) spinning at stupid speeds and only two(???) years in production with a 5yr 60k mile warranty is very cool but is also a big gamble. I watched the videos that Ford put out re: the Ecoboost torture test. It's a tough engine and can survive lots of abuse over the short haul, but time and weathering take a toll too.

OK now is where the title of the post comes in...considering a 2013 Ram 1500, with a proven 5.7l engine, 100k mile drivetrain warranty, air suspension and everything else comparable at $10k less. Loyalty to a brand or diving into the unknown for much less money, is the grass greener or not? The age old question. I have not made up my mind in any way, it's just that my decision now has another facet to consider. With equal marketing hype on both sides, trying to get through the muddied water and see clearly the hype separated from the benefits and the negative issues that each brand has had but are trying to gloss over is the trick. Decisions, decisions...

Can't really help but the new Rams do look nice and have a bunch of nice features/upgrades. If it was out when I got my 2010 there would have been more thinking!

I don't envy your position. lol

Yes, the 2013 RAM"s look nice but from what I understand, some of them are made in mexico. I had lots of issues with a vehicle made in Mexico and I will never make that mistake again.

The Ram's price isn't magic, its $10k less for a reason. And those turbos on the ecoboost are neither new technology or "expensive" to fix.

Why not consider the 5.0L?

I agree with Almighty. 5.0 is a solid engine. Personally I would not want an Ecoboost. However, I have a 2004 F150 FX4 with the 5.4L. and a 2011 Dodge Ram 2500 Hemi. and i can say from expirience that my ol trusty ford has more "truck" in it than the 3/4 ton ram. The Hemi IMO is built for racing and normal driving, rather than torque and pulling. \
Also, the air suspension takes the rugged truck feel off the drive. some people may like the smoother car-feel ride, but i personally, buy a truck, to drive a truck. the payload on the air suspension may be rated the same as those with leafs, but it sags much more, and looks more...pathetic. For me, its an easy decision. 5.0 Ford F-150. I'd rather push my Ford then drive a Dodge!

Just happened to be looking through the November 2011 motor trend magazine where they show all the new cars. Looked at the f150 and the ram 1500, and the ram hd. F150 towing 5200#-11,300# Ram 3450#-10,450# F150 payload 930 #-3000# Ram 1350# -1850#. Thought it interesting that the Ram hd had less minimum towing and payload (tow 8350, payload 1450) Than my 2009 f150 (tow 9500# , payload 1950#
Long story short less money, less truck

I started my Ford life w/ a '94 F150 regular can 2WD XL 4.9L inline 6, then went to a '94 Bronco with the 351 Windsor which was a beast. Both of them worked hard, did many miles and never a lick of problems. Went truckless for a while and went to an '04 Hemi Ram. It was a nice truck pulled well hauled well but had to have the rear end replaced TWICE before 70k and replace both front calipers at 36k because they were cracking. The quality and feel of the build wasn't there either. Got some horrible wind noise very early on and lots of internal can squeaks and creaks. Glad to be back in an F150. The new RAM looks nice but it has even more techno gimmicks to achieve mileage ratings.
