The cat on my ATS (2.0T) had to be replaced when it was a month old. It was broken inside. Not even a thousand miles on it. I'm guessing it was damaged before installation.

Misfires can make a Cat fail for sure. Here is mine after I had a miss-fire and found a plug well full of water on my 2000 F-150. It had only been driven to and from work once before I found the issue (15 miles round trip).

Complete custom Exhaust was being installed when I found it, no codes had popped up yet.

2010 4.6 3v at 15k ish can't remember anymore cat internals on left side dislodged clogging exhaust leaving us stranded in Erie PA on a road trip. 2012 5.0 at 6k right cat internals dislodged both were replaced under warranty but only blame was a lot of short quick stops and cheap fuel I lived in El Paso with both trucks. Stuff happens I wouldn't be worried.

That picture is worth well more than 1000 words. I'm truly amazed that that happened.

Yeah, I've never seen one like that, and that's 30 years of wrenching under my belt, all the ones I have seen were either glazed over or busted up into pieces.

I was just lucky I guess

Only other thing I can figure is that the previous owner also had misfires or some sort of other failure causing it. But I checked temps on the cats when I got the truck and they were the same. but, the truck never threw a code either, so hard to tell.

My mpg's went up after the exhaust swap (LT's, High flow cats, 1-2 Magnaflow cat-back, all SS). So maybe it was messed up for some time???
