Premium Gas? You Decide

It takes more miles to calculate MTE than it does to detect and adjust the fuel type, so I'm betting the MTE will change quicker once it detects E-85 than anything else. The PCM stores tables with this type of information as a baseline.
My truck is getting 21 MPG and the DTE doesn't change much until I get under 1/4 tank, then it changes drastically even though my MPG hasn't changed. I can show 700 MTE, and stay there up to 1/4 tank, then I some how lose 100 miles. When I fill up, it is back to 700 MTE.
IOW I never trust that it will be accurate.

DTE is based on the most recent 500 miles driven.

I filled up today, the dash showed 20.9 MPG, actual came out to 19.4. DTE after fill was 730. I think its more of a Dr. Feelgood than anything else. Hard to say where it actually comes from.

730 / 36 = _____
Nothing surprising there.

Dash reads 21.2, DTE is 20.2, actual is 19.4, No consistency, so my claim stands.
What is really puzzling is that I can go through 3/4 tank and get nice consistent 21 MPG readout, and that last 1/4 tank it plummets. You would think the truck would gain MPG as it gets lighter, not lose it.

when I worked for both Ford and Chrysler, I did see this as a real effect, intended to happen by the manufacturer. The gauge has unequal lines so it drops slowly at the beginning and then much faster towards the end. They really do this on purpose so the you don't get ticked off at the truck for being at 3/4 after only a few miles down the road...

Ok - so I had my fun run of E85 and today, I filled the tank with Premium. With roughly 50/50 city/highway driving, my 5.0L Coyote motor got 13.0MPG in the last tank. This came to:
Cost: $50.74 (32.76 gal @ $1.549)
Miles driven 421 miles
Cost/Mile = $0.12
Today, I put in 93 octane from Costco.
Cost: $69.94 (32.394 gal @ $2.159)
Upon starting the vehicle, I looked at the DTE, and it said 498 mi:
A few miles later, it said 552.
A few miles after that, it said 602, but as I was on the freeway at that point, I didn't take a photo of that.
It seems DTE doesn't require a full 500 miles to recalibrate after changing fuel types. The DTE values started changing within 1.5 miles.

That's .61 cents a gallon difference, is that worthwhile to you? By my rough calculations, if there is much less than .80 cents a gallon difference, I just stick with 93. Today, I saw E85 at 1.98, and 93 at 2.99. If I'd had the 150, I'd likely have filled up.

93 octane premium at a station much more convenient to where I live costs $2.79 (that same station is charging $2.05 for regular), which makes the E85 differential over $1.20... I had to make the 20 min drive up north to pick up the 93 at this cheaper price... because I have the big fuel tank, the extra drive is worth it to me, especially if it's roughly where I need to be for work reasons (which it was).
Now, the next 600+ miles will tell me what the best cost/gal of Premium I can find locally will be.. and then finally, compare that to a full tank of 87.

Could be dredging up an old thread, but this holds true for batteries as well. Pretty much all made by Johnson Controls, with standard internal base part numbers. The only difference is the retail store sticker on the top determining how much you're willing to pay....
