Possible newer truck
Looking to trade my truck in but Im a little on the nervous side. I own a southern 1998 f150 4.6 xlt with the off road package single cab with 130,000 miles on it. It is in great condition no rust what so ever and has been well maintained. I guess what im looking for is advice about the trade if I deside to do it. I have never bought a vehicle from a ford dealer before and as a matter of fact the truck I own was purchased at a buy here pay here dealer due to finacial and credit problems. I believe the truck is a 2007 with 80,000 miles FX4, leather interior, 5.4 motor. I have heard that these trucks have an issue with cam phasers. I listened to the truck and it sounds like there is a ticking sound. I asked the sales man about it and he explained to me that he would have him mecanics take a look at it. There asking 26,995 for it. To me thats a lot of coin to drop on an 07 whats yall opinion on it and what should I be expecting there offer to be on my truck?

To give you a pricing perspective, I bought mine this year of May a used 2009 SUPER CREW, 4.6 3V, XLT, 4x4, with chrome and tow package, 6.5' bed with man step built in the tailgate and bed side steps. It has 43,000 miles on it already. The sale price is $24,999. With tax and tag, it was just over 25,700. I put down 5,000 and financed the rest. I got a decent deal, cause most similar configured trucks like mine at that time were at least 28-29K easy.
Hope that helps. Like that other guy said, 18,000 is a much more realistic price. I would do lots of comparison shopping with local and online dealers. That way it will give a realistic average on what a used car should be based on your criteria. And don't fall in love with it either, F-150s are a dime a dozen. Used car salesmen are like sharks, they smell your money (blood) a mile away. Don't let them pressure you.
Bring a flexible weak refridgerator magnet with you, and stick it all over the car. That way you can tell they put bondo or some body filler on it. Be mindful that some trucks like duallys have quarterpanels are made of fiberglass instead of metal. If the magnet drops where it should stick, then it possibly was in a accident. Check bolts for telltale signs of huge amount of parts replacement - due to accidents. Smell the interior for mildew due to flooding. There is lots of tips out there to check for a used car. Bring a trusted mechanic if you dont know what to do.
Look online like autotrader and the like and carfax (not 100%, but should give you a good idea of a cursory glance at a car's history), good luck on your search.

The price is what you want to pay, not letting them to decide for you. But you want to price out similar trucks so you have an idea on what to negotiate down to. If you are seriously considering buying that 2007 truck for that ungodly price you should not walk, but to run away. They are looking for uneducated suckers. I bought mine from a high volume seller. They are pushing out cars at a decent price. Used car dealers are different from each other. If they are high priced, they will be more likely to nickel and dime you to death.
Not sure how much you qualify for... but check with your bank on financing and interest rates. That will help you realisticlly on what you can afford. Hope that helps.

Dude the first thing u should do is get the Blue Book value of this truck, so at least you'll know what its worth.
As far as negotiating tips. I have always had the best luck with being a polite likable guy, but you don't wanna come off as a push over. Be courteous, but firm. Set a price you will pay for this vehicle before you walk in the door. If they do not meet the price, thank them for their time, then politely tell them you simply can not afford that price.
Don't let them even mention "what monthly payment are you trying to achieve?" because they all will. What is important is the total amount you pay for the truck, not how low your payments can be.
I'd say that's quite a bit too high for that truck. Good looking FX, but you need to talk them waaay down.

If it's an 07 you shouldn't have cam phaser problems, that was only to 2004-2005 F-150's. The noise you are hearing is more than likely your injectors. They are quite loud on these trucks.
