Please ease my mind! lol
My father-in-law is a retired sheriffs deputy here in San Diego so he is naturally very paranoid about the smallest things... Anyway, the other day we went to the store to pick up some balloons for a baby shower as we're about to walk in he says "crap.. forgot to lock my truck" (2015 F250 FX4 Diesel). Instead of pulling out his remote to lock it from afar he walks all the way back to his truck and locks it using the door pad. I then asked him, "is your remote out of batteries?". His response to this day still haunts me... lol. He said, " No, there's a new theft tactic where thieves will pick a victim and wait for said victim to park. Once parked they wait for him/her to lock their vehicle with the remote. The thieves have a transmitter that records the code from the remote and use it to unlock your truck to rob you and possibly steal your car/truck"... I've been locking it with the door pad ever since... How true is this? any of you ever heard of this? is it even possible?

Dang, even with the same background as him I'm not nearly that paranoid. In my area, turds prefer unlocked cars unless they see something good, then they will smash and grab. Or if they want to rob you, they'll just hang out by your car and do it anyway. I wouldn't worry unless it starts happening frequently. Best piece of advice is to lock it and do not leave anything in the car that looks enticing (backpacks, wallets, purses, electronics, tools, golf clubs, etc). Remember, locks, doors and windows only keep honest people out.

What Jbone said. Up here, only the tourists lock their vehicles, houses, etc. I will lock it when in the city, every city. But geez, maybe someone needs to move. Sounds like my wife, she even locks the house up when taking the trash out. Of course she lives in the Duhtroit metro area.

And the reality is that they need to be monitoring and very close to the transmitter, so your FIL is simply being paranoid.

Yes it can happen. Someone did it to me. I had a gun taken out of my truck in July. When I reported it to police they viewed camera footage of where my truck was parked. They got a vague description of some guy who walked up to my truck minutes after my wife and I walked into a restaurant. I now only unlock the doors with the remote. I lock them by hand.
