THANK YOU! I know exactly what you mean, I am a junior in high school and most of the people in my school don't do anything them selfs! I do what ever I can myself unless I don't have the equipment (most of the time an air compressor and air tools) but seeing how the labor usually costs the same or more than price of equipment, It usually makes a good excuse for new tools.

I thank my father, when I got my first vehicle he showed me how to change my oil, brakes, clutch, etc, anything that needed to be done maintenance wise... I took those skills further throughout owning many vehicles and here I am at 30yrs old and haven't yet needed to bring a vehicle into a mechanic... If my dad didn't show me what he knows, I wouldn't be where I am now...
My sister also takes care of her own vehicles, she's even done transmission swaps by herself... Although now she calls me or my dad to help her out most of the time, well for the tougher stuff

I just remember that I will more likely have more play money in life because I don't have to call a professional for every little thing cuz usually guys like us can do the stuff that needs to get done around the house as well! The rich snot nosed kids you referred to will spend thousands a year in stupid stuff like that.

Learning to do things yourself means you know what it takes to do something. Often it is not I dont want to get my hands dirty, it is I am so busy doing the other things that are more important to me. I can do it..... just prefer to play with my grandchildren or talk to my kids... Dont ever tell them I said that.....
