Default parking brake release handle

1997 F150 4 x 4. Parking brake release cable snapped. Bought a new unit from Ford and thought it would be simple to replace. How can I get to the plastic part that snaps into a bracket? I don't have the room to squeeze the barbs shut to pull back and it looks like I would have to remove a fuse panel just to make room. Any photo or link would be appreciated. Thank you...

I managed to get a pair of channel locks onto the plastic piece that snaps into place on the bracket and just crushed it until it came out. Putting in the new unit was easy. i thought I was going to have to remove the entire parking brake mechanism as a unit to just get it done. Thank you and hope this makes it easier for you in the future.
