Replace your thermostat first. They are really cheap and easy to replace. Also your rad will always be hot to the touch nature of the beast

Be sure to replace your thermostat first . . . I put alot of money into my truck before I realized what the problem was. It's easy to install it yourself, and they are dirt cheap too!
note: It's a good idea to use a silicon gasket maker

My antifreeze is shot but if I'm gonna replace the radiator I don't wanna flush now......I'm gonna do thermostat radiator and belts next weekend. I did my waterpump 6 months ago so that should be fine.

Default 1997 F-150 Overheating

I've read all the overheating cases and I can't find the answer.
My 4.6L is overheating after about 1 hour. We replaced the thermostat and the fan clutch. Radiator is flushed and the problem persists.

After driving the first hour or so, the truck overheats and it cools down after 3 minutes turned off and then overheats again after 10 driving or idle.

Two days ago (Thursday), it overheated after driving 40 miles. The mechanic drove it for 130 and it didn't overheat. He told me that the coolant cap was not tightening so he used glue for a provisional fix. It seemed logical and it worked.

I opened the cap to refill the coolant before driving back home. I drove 150miles but it overheated on the last 30 miles.

I will change the bottle and cap tomorrow (monday) but I want to know what else could be.
