Old Time member looking to get back into an F-150 again!
Had an '04 Lariat SCAB a while back and was pretty active on here. Sold it and got a 2007 FX4 Level II Ranger, then sold it off and have been in a car for a while due to gas mileage on the trucks.
I'm looking at getting back into an F-150 again due to how much they've improved on fuel economy.
2016+ are what I'm looking into. I drive a '15 2.7 EB at work and it's pretty dang impressive. I love the 5.0, but am at a crossroads with what I want.
Any tips or things to look out for in these newer ones? After dealing with the old 5.4 3V craziness with the plugs and timing component nightmare, I want to avoid anything like that from occuring again.

im glad to hear you want to get back in a f150. first off, what are you expectations of a truck? it sounds like good fuel economy is must for you so we will take that into consideration when deciding what power plant is best for you

Truthfully, even the ratings for the 5.0 are good to me. My old F-150 and the Ranger both got around 12-13 mpg combined, so around 20 highway is a good upgrade.

I am thinking you might need to stay with the 2.7 to try and get that kind of Combined mileage especially cruising around Knoxville. You might get 20 out of a stock height 4X2 on all highway with the 5.0

Read the 2015-present forums, they'd have to offer me quite a bit off to get a new 5.0. Ecoboost all the way, great deals to be had on the 2018 3.0 Diesel but it's a bit sluggish...not enough sold to know if there are any real issues with them.
Biggest truck selling dealer is 30 mins from me, they had ONE 5.0 truck in stock last I checked...they had 686 crew cabs in stock, they just didn't bother ordering 5.0s.

I don’t want to discourage you at all but I would maybe look at the issues the 2018-19s are having especially the 5.0’s before purchasing one. I sure wish I would have done my research before buying one. Won’t take you long to find some threads on knocking, rattling, deceleration rattle, warped dash, transmission issues, acceleration whistling and the list goes on and on. Not to be a Debbie downer but just maybe look into it. I’ve always been a ford guy and this is by far the worst vehicle I have ever owned.

I own one, and it out accelerates most non-hipo cars on the road. They always try to snake you(trucks) coming away from onramp lights, and even with a lift and 35's, it pulls most cars no problem. I bought it because of its mileage(I drive 30kmi/yr), and even with the lift and 35's I'm averaging 21mpg.
If you're happy with topping out at 20mpg, the 2.7 will be fine though. Obviously you'll find it the cheapest(boosted) F150, as you don't need to suck up Lariat or above to get it

From all the '18/'19 5.0 problems posted here i myself wouldn't even consider a 5.0 in those years.
Having said that i have a '16 5.0 which is perfect in all regards along with the tried and proven 6 speed tranny.
Ford apparently screwed up the latest 5.0s which is a dam shame.
I myself if i was looking for a new truck today i'd shoot for a 3.5 or even a 2.7 and cross my fingers.
