Default Oil pan

I went in for an oil change and got a call two hours later saying I needed a new oil pan. I was told the tac weld failed due to the normal wear of an oil pan. There was no leak when I went in. It did not start leaking until they got on the rack. I believe they put too much torque on the plug breaking the weld. First, is this "normal" to happen? Second, how much should it cost to replace an oil pan through a Ford dealership? Lastly, the truck is only three years old. Thank you in advance for your response and suggestions!

This is why I do all my own oil changes. Was this at a dealer? If so, I'd make a big stink about it. I can't stand those quick oil change places either and the quality of help they employ.

Yes, it was! I'm now trying to get them to do the right thing. I know, they're not about to do the right thing or admit they did it. It's just supposed to be a coincidence that the weld failed at the exact moment they touched it. Thank you for commenting!

I asked them about that and they said they would only charge me once for oil. The only answer I got about it was that the tac weld failed due to the normal wear of the pan.

First I have heard of an oil pan being a wearable replacement item..... If it's torqued properly and never cross threaded, it should last the life of the vehicle. I call foul on that. I could see if you brought it in and that specific shop had never touched it before, and the bolt was over torqued or cross threaded and non repairable. Coming to a middle road on replacement costs. But the weld around the drain hole bung. Keep us posted on this.
