Default New (to Me) F-150 Ecoboost Noise

First time F-150 owner! It took my wife years to convince me the F-150 was better than the rest.

Anyway, I recently purchased a used 2014 FX4 with the 3.5 ecoboost engine. When I test drove it everything was great. Now, a week later I hear what sounds like tin cans rattling when I'm under very low RPMs, and idles rough when it's cold. Everything else seems fine, truck feels as though it is running great, I get 15.6 mpg without really trying.

I've read the forum, and have heard everything from Gas to Turbo to heat shield.

This is my first Turbo anything, so I'm a little nervous. Hoping I didn't just get into a Lemon!

Suggestions on where I should start? I did put a can of sea foam in the tank, wondering if the previous owner used cheap/low octane gas?

Thanks in advance,

I don't own an EB motor....but.....I've heard of timing chain issues on some EB motors. Makes a rattle sound at startup/lower RPM's. Someone with more EB experience will chime in

I heard one recently at our shop that had developed some play in the wastegate and it made a rattling type noise until it warmed up. It was loud enough to worry somebody for sure, but I don't know if that's what you're hearing.

Can you elaborate on this? I have a noise from the lower front drivers side which the sound is similar to severe denotation or a rattling, typically only on low speed acceleration.

On the other side I think I go the value body noise, but its so random I don't think I can time it to a dealer visit. I am taking it in soon for the brake recall so I am going to have then check the no on the tranny to see if it falls in the range of affected vehicles.

I think I've found most of the issue. After removing the noise dampening material under the truck (which by the way was half falling off), I realized there was a broken clamp on one of the exhaust pipes. Removing that stopped most of the noise. There is still a rattle coming from the heat shield above the pipe. Thinking I'm going to have to see if a local exhaust shop can put a new clamp on and shore up the heat shield.

Welcome to the forum, and the F-150 family. Happy to hear it was a minor problem. And, if the truck is still under warranty I'd take 'er to the dealer. Good luck.

Exactly. Why pay someone to fix as the deal should cover it since it's only been a week? Congrats on the pickup!

There you go - I gave you an "atta boy" . I'm more of a lurker, learn and definitely take to heart - (note the 5 year icon).
