Default New guy with a question

I've got a 2002 f150 super cab with a 4.6l and a manual trans. I own a 17.5" boat that comes no where near the max payload. but something smells like it is burning when I back it into the driveway.......seems to do it mostly in reverse? Any ideas? Should I put and cooler on the trans?

Open to suggestions!

Welcome!

I wouldn't pull anything without a tranny cooler, just to be safe.

Is your driveway on a slope? My old man has an '03 F350 SuperDuty and when he backs his boat up his mildly sloped driveway the tranny always gets a little hot, even with a large tranny cooler. Combination of the slope and making the tranny work hard but not turn much.

Hope that helps!

You said its a manual transmission. No cooler on those unless you put some exotic pump system. Just need to sniff around the truck to find out where the smell is the strongest.

I woudl say somethign with the rear brakes, or the trailer brakes.

Do you have surge brakes on the trailer? those can be a pain in the rear to back up.

As ty said if you have surge/hydraulic trailer brakes they can drag when backing up or might be the clutch as also mentioned above.

Default Backing Trailer

Thanks for all the input guys, the trailer doesn't have any surge brakes,
The clutch is brand new, about a two months old, I've never been on to ride the clutch maybe I'll have to pay closer attention next time I back it up. I've niced it only to do it around the yard or house where I have rough uneven ground and an upward sloped drive way. on a boat ramp it doesn't do it towing down the road doesn't do it. So maybe it's has somethig to do with me on the clutch trying to slowly back it up the drive and not put it throught the garge door.
Thanks for all you help.
