I just took delivery on a new F150 XLT with the 5.0. On two occasions after driving a minimum of an hour I shut down the truck and restarted within 10 minutes. Upon restarting the front fan was very fast/loud for approx 15 seconds than slowed down to normal. All gauges were ok expect the trans temp gauge was all the way to the left (cold) and than warmed up.

Is this normal for the fan to run so fast?

Yes.

Yes. The warm/hot coolant in the radiator and engine block caused this when the engine was shut down, and then restarted before the coolant could cool down. On my aftermarket E-Fan setup, My fan will run about 10 to 15 seconds after shutdown to aid in cooling down the coolant after the engine is shut off if needed.
