Need a new truck after the explosion!
 

So my 2010 had a catastrophic engine failure, which come to find out is "common"
I NEED a truck now.
I have a few I am looking at. Have some questions for the community.
Looking at 2013 -2016. My mechanic says get a 5.0, or a 6cyl, but NOT TURBO.
I found a 2016, XLT Supercrew 6cyl, with 25k for $24,995. But I also have a 2013 XTR Super crew 8cyl 5.0 with 16k for $24,995.
Which one is a better vehicle?
I do not tow anything, I drive 60 miles a day round trip, the 6cyl will save $ on fuel costs, and is newer, but the 2013 has less miles.
I could use some opinions

I personally would go for the 2013, but that is only for body style and engine preference.


I had a 2011 with the 3.7 NA V6 and for what I use my trucks for it was perfectly fine. It was quite peppy in the super cab. I only had it for 9 months though before I got bored with it and bought a little sports car. Having owned a 5.0 and the 3.7, 5.0 for me.

If you can be happy with a 6 cylinder, go that route. 9,000 more miles really isn't that much to get into the newer body style and lighter truck (that will help fuel economy that much more). I'd consider both trucks to be low mileage still.

Also, you're mechanic is very biased. I'd recommend a 2015+ 2.7 ecoboost if you'd open it up to the ecoboosts.

From a gas mileage standpoint, my 2011 supercab 3.7 averaged 17.5 for the 9 months I had it. That was based on the trucks display (not hand calculated) and around 50/50 city/highway. My 2013 RCSB 5.0 averaged either 16.5 or 16.8 (got rid of it 2 years ago, so I don't remember) over the nearly 3 years I had it. That was hand calculated. Computer showed a little more.

The computers have typically been .5-1 mpg higher than hand calculations according to most here and from my experience. My 13 was .5 off, my 14 Tremor was .9 off, both consistently.

dude... that's way too much to pay for a used truck when they're about the same brand new... i bought a brand new 2016 2.7 ecoboost sport with a few other options for 26K.

i average 19mph with houston traffic cruising around 80 on the highway.

...and your mechanic needs to learn how to work on modern engines.

I bought a 2011 2wd XLT Crew with the 3.7L/373 gears new. I now own a 2013 2wd Platinum Crew with the 5.0L/331 gears. The V8 does as good, or better than the V6 on gas mileage. So in my humble opinion get the V8. You'll be glad you did.

Skip the NA V6 for super crew.....always.

The older gen is more comfortable and rides better than the 15+, unless the shocks have been replaced with aftermarkets like Bilstien or Fox. The seats are not nearly as comfortable as the 09-14.

Also your mechanic only says that because he is scared to work on one. Look for a good used 14 as they have the best build quality due to it being the final year of that style. 5.0 or 3.5 either are great engines.

I have a 2015 Supercrew with the 3.5l na. I absolutely love this truck. It has plenty of power for what I need and can tow 7,600lbs. I am averaging 22mpg.

Stay away from the non turbo V6 engines in these trucks. Drove one while my truck was getting warranty work and hated it. Just not enough power for a vehicle this size. It was a dog. 2.7TT or 3.5TT vs 5.0 is a debatable decision. But the N/A V6 vs the 5.0 V8 shouldn't even be a question. Get the V8.
