Default 2018 F150 Order - Should I Wait For Diesel?

I will be placing an order for a F150 XL STX Extended Cab with the 5.0 V8. Should I wait for the new diesel? I will be using the truck for towing every now and then. Would it cause more headaches when winter comes around?

If you are worried about 5.0 vs diesel for towing reasons you should already be thinking 3.5TT vs diesel anyway in terms of towing ability, especially if you are throwing the "simplicity factor" out the window by thinking about a brand new diesel offering.

When EXACTLY is the F150 getting a diesel? If you want a diesel and a new truck now, get a F250.

I have read many forums about the 5.0 vs the 3.5TT. Should I choose the 3.5TT for towing then? Would the V8 has less problems.

I would never buy a diesel again unless I was towing trailers 8,000 pounds and heavier on a regular basis at least once a month, every month.

If you are serious about towing, you should buy whichever F-150 has the most payload capacity, regardless of 5.0 vs 3.5TT. Power will not be your limiting issue. If you are REALLY serious about towing, you would get a HDPP truck with a 3.5TT. Maybe an HDPP with 5.0, but definitely an HDPP truck.

Or just get a F250 gasser or an F350. Do they make the F350 with a gasser? I have no idea.

Both engines will be able to tow the weight I need. I think its now just which one I prefer.

Isn't it always? Pick what you want and get it in the driveway. Can't go wrong.

I would say go with the 3.5 or wait and get the diesel.

Everybody knows I'm not a big fan of the EcoBust engines because of the complexity and problems they've had. However, the current 3.5TT engine is the second generation, with "no shared parts with the original" according to Ford, so in theory it should be a better engine now that will serve you well for a long time. It also does have 470 lbs/ft of torque, which is pretty much spot on what the diesel will offer when it comes out, except the 3.5TT has more horsepower, gasoline is easier to find, and basic maintenance will cost far less.

I'm a diesel lover, but the fact is these new diesel engines today have been ruined by the EPA to the point that it no longer makes sense to buy one. They cost more to purchase, more to operate, more to work on, and they don't make more power than gas engines nor do they get better MPGs in the real world than gas engines (in half-ton truck applications).

I'd be looking at 3.5LTT in your case.
