Default need new air filter assembly-should i switch?

ok here's your laugh for the night.... finally replaced my 1995 with a 2003 w/5.4 triton. nice truck, clean outside. lot of open road miles. last couple days i moved it around my driveway getting it out of the wayj, no plates yet. tonight it wouldn't start. dark/cold etc..... couldn't get air filter apart so i drilled hole, shot ether and blew plastic parts and the filter into my neighbors yard. sounded like a muzzle loader!!!!!! so...... do i replace the air assembly with original parts or do i get one of these kits i read about from wester motor sports. nothing on what i have now is usable. need the whole shibang.
i care about mileage not horsepower. that engine has all the power i need. not towing or hauling much. It's my work truck for HVAC. any suggestions would be appreciated. any "digs" i deserve/dave in ohio

I would just go with a cheap eBay intake. They serve the purpose.

just get a stock replacement, you'll never re-coop your money getting anything else. try junk yards first...

Awesome story....... I prefer the stock setup, the airflow sound of the aftermarket stuff will drive you nuts on a work truck. For a little extra umph and a clear shot for ether you can drill a hole behind the grill to get more air thru the stock setup, I did this on my Excursion. Just google it youll find some info.
