Default Need help with buying decision

Well, it's time to upgrade my 04 FX4 supercab. To stay within my budget of around $32K, I gonna have to make a decision.

4WD and supercrew are musts (I really dislike the rear doors on the supercabs, I can't understand why Ford won't use the style like Dodge and Toyota).

It's looking like I can get a high level of luxury (platinum, limited, lariat) for this price in a 13-14, but more like an XLT for a 15.

So lemme hear your thoughts on whether or not the 15 benefits outweigh the luxury of the pre 15. Thanks

I'm about to trade my 2012 Platinum for a 2018 Plat. It has 59000km (36600 miles)
It's easily the best problem free truck I've had and hope the new one will be just as good. 31k US takes it away. PM me if interested or want more info

For me coming out of an 04 Lariat Supercrew and now into an 11 XLT supercab, I would say to go the route of newer with a lesser package (besides the XL). Unless leather is a must have most of these newer XLT trucks have the technology you wanted in a nicer older ford. I have more features in an 11 XLT than I hoped to have in my 04 ford. Plus you'll always have a newer, and hopefully better engineered truck with probably less miles.

Also I think the supercab on ford is the best way to do it. I have a 15 Silverado extended cab for a work truck and you find that when the doors don't butterfly open, it's pretty tough to fit big objects in the backseat bc the opening of the door is so small. Just my opinion

Yeah, I'm in an 04 FX4 supercab now. That's why I said supercrew is a must. I went from an 08 Tundra supercab (same basic size but rear doors had their own handle and opened up normally) and to downgrade to due divorce. But I'm back on my feet now and ready to get something nicer. Thanks for the advice.

Really depends on what's more important to you. Loaded previous generation or lesser package aluminum body. When I went to the lot to pick up a new truck, I was there to get a Platinum. All my neighbors seem to have one so I figured that's what I wanted. But a loaded 302a package XLT caught my eye. I loved it. Right color and 4x4. When compared to the others on the lot, I realized I could live without some of the other features. Everything except for leather seats. Negotiated Katzkin leather and I was out the door. Don't regret a thing.

Welcome to the forum Bill. As the old saying goes, "Buy the newest with the lowest mileage your budget will allow." That being said, and if your looking more for a luxury trim level, my '13 Platinum 5.0 2wd has been trouble for 33K miles. The only problem, and it's with almost every F-150 along those years, is the front rotors have a tendency to wrap a little. I can live with that. Good luck on your search.

BTW, get ready to feel a little looseness in the drivelines of the "13+ trucks. I think they all have that little annoyance. I'm not sure about the new generation ('16+) though.

I was in the same boat last winter when my 05 Frontier needed replaced and I decided a crew cab F150 was needed for my growing family. New trucks were out of my price range so I was looking at 2015's and 2013/14's.

I really liked the 2015's. The interior is nicer, the seats felt more comfortable to me, I really liked the engine choices, the handling was better, and I liked the idea of having aluminum that wouldn't rust with Ohio's overuse of salt.

But my 2005 Frontier was a first model year truck just like the 2015 is, and I had a lot of problems with it right after it was out of warranty. And having owned 3 Rangers in the past, I don't think Ford's quality is quite on par with Nissan's so the new model scared me even more. For me, I decided that a 2015 and even a 2016 wasn't worth the risk for a truck I want to keep for 200,000 miles/10 years.

On the other hand, the 2013 and 2014 are the last 2 years for that generation, so Ford had plenty of time to work out the bugs.

Also, I didn't need any luxury items EXCEPT dual zone heating and cooling. I was sick and tired of fighting the temperature every single time my wife rode with me! FX4 and above in the 2014's have that, XLT's don't.

I'd say buy the most recent one... You'll lose some options, but the XLT, if it comes with the 302a package, is very well equipped!

The only thing I dislike is that it doesn't come with the push to start button (man, having to insert the key every time is very annoying) & has standard outdated halogen headlights...
