Default Need help

OK Guys, I have a 04 FX4 with 166,000 miles on it, lately I have been hearing the best way I can describe it is like a whining noise, coming from the engine. I have heard the same noise on many other vehicles but did not pay attention to it, untill now. What am my hearing. Any help would be Greatly appreciated.

Take the belt off and start the engine, if the noise goes away then it's one of the pulleys bearings going bad. Try spinning each pulley by hand to see if they are all smooth and not gritty feeling. If none of the pulleys feels gritty it could be the power steering pump.

Like Rnlcomp said that's the best way to isolate it, it's not unusual for the power steering pump to develop whinning sound. Another idea is to take a long handle screwdriver and use it as a stethoscope put the blade on your p/s pump and the end to your ear and go to your alternator do this until you find what's making the noise. Old School but it works.
