Default Is my truck 4x4?

I have a 1988 Ford F150 Custom Straight 6cyl 300 engine, single cab long bed. On my dash I have a light for four wheel drive, but the last guy said it was two wheel drive. why would they install that light at the factory if it was 2wd?

Look under the engine for a differential.

I'm sure there also is a code in your VIN or somewhere on the truck that would indicate if the truck has 4wd or not as well.

...... ...............................Look at the front end...if theres a front axle.. that'd be 4wd..

Yes the 2wd and 4wd trucks have the same dash.. they will have the lights........ Does the truck have a transfer case shifter...

Post a picture of the truck

Wouldn't a two wheel drive truck have a differential?

Not to sound like an ***, but I'm pretty sure that a dead giveaway is if its got a front axle or just suspension and steering components. Maybe the previous owner didn't know what they had... or the dash/cluster is out of another truck.

EDIT: no... a 2wd truck will not have a FRONT differential.

....Depending on what you think a differential is... a 2wd will have a rear differential..

A 4wd will have a rear differential and a front differential... along with a transfer case.. bolted behind the transmission

All the trucks will have the same dash and cluster... the 2wd will not have the ability to illuminate... but it will have the spot to plug in the light.. just no light or wireing
