My transmission slips in overdrive
 

Hello everyone, I'm having some trouble with my transmission or so it seems, and your help/ advice will be greatly appreciated. When my truck is in fourth gear (overdrive) and cruising about 45 mph, then i push the pedal to accelerate, my truck will jerk, acting almost like i hit a pot hole. This started about a month ago, and has been getting worse. All other gears are fine, shift smooth and strong. Only in overdrive does this jerking happen, and only when i accelerate a little bit, (not enough to make it downshift) My fluid level is fine. I'm worried this may be my transmission crappin out on me:help:. I have taken it to a shop, they could find nothing wrong. And no codes to indicate what is wrong. They said it sounds like a misfiring cylinder. But i am skeptical of this. Please help

:unsure:The MAF sensor may be going south....a long shot, but possible. That turned out to be the cause of an inexplicable hard lurch in my granddaughter's Ranger 4.0L.

Another remote possibility: Bad or mis-set MLP sensor on the tranny. Double check that the sensor body is not loose on its mounts, the connector to it is clean and secure and the neutral marks line up with the shift lever in neutral.:unsure:

you're torque converter is getting worn. drive it till it dies then replace. my truck was doing the same thing. i had the tranny rebuilt, put a shift kit in it and new torque converter. $1600 (good deal) then drove it from california to michigan. with no problums. as a matter of fact, she will almost bark the tires gong into 2nd.

shift pattern: D.....2nd.....3rd.....4th.....5th.....6th

4th and 6th is torque converter lock up

everytime it hit 4th and 6th it would "chatter" RATATATAT!!

what yours is doing is when you give it some gas it will slip then...BAM! the clutch plates in the torque converter will catch. couse they are worndown.

do you want to know the reason why? on the freeway, everytime you let off the gas the dam torque converter will disengage. to "HELP" slow the truck down...well,

now the reason i had my tranny rebuilt along with a shift kit and new torque converter is couse the tranny rebuild kit comes with a delite kit. that delite kit keeps the torque converter from engaging and disengaging everytime you let off the peddle.

when i got my truck back from the mechanic, i got on the freeway, got up to 65 and let my foot off the gas. the truck didn't downshift like it did before. this tranny and torque converter should last a long time.

Vince, What did you find out? Was this a trans problem? Our truck is an 05 4x4 with the 5.4. My wife's daily driver, last week when I drove to dealer for service i noticed the same thing when going up a slight grade. Trans was in high gear, with load, at low rpm say 1,500, surges just like you described. If you put your foot in it and it kick downs, no problem. Dealer just did normal oil, fuel, air filter service and also did trans service and power flush. Did not seem to help. Truck only has 60K and has never hauled anything other than groceries. I first i thought it was a dirty fuel filter or bad plug or wire, so I never mentioned to dealer. After drive it more this weekend I think it feels like a trans OD problem.

My 2004 F-150 5.4L is doing the same thing. I've got about 150k miles on it now, but same symptoms. Low RPMs, in overdrive, slow acceleration makes it jerk like its slipping or something.

Doesn't seem to do it with Overdrive disengaged or when stepping on it to accelerate to pass for example.

It isn't one gear either, It will do it 30-40 mph or 50-60 mph too. Mostly noticeable cruising down the freeway and gently accelerating. I dropped it off at the dealership this morning, we'll see what they have to say.

I have a 3rd party warranty, so hopefully if its something major the warranty will pick it up.

^ you might need new plugs brotha' mine jerked in OD at 45ish fresh plugs and all is good

Tensioner Guide broke apparently
 

Dealership says one of my Tensioner Guides broke (whatever that is) But they said when those break they like to replace them all. Total cost $2600.

Warranty company needs to go inspect it now apparently..

I know I'm jumping on a pretty old thread here but I just got an '05 F150 5.4L and it came with plenty of mechanical stuff that I get to fix. The first problem that I noticed was a rough idle. The entire truck shutters when it's in park. Not long after that I noticed that the transmission will miss and then suddenly catch a gear as I accelerate on the highway anywhere between 50-75mph, especially on an upgrade. Could my transmission problem be caused by the timing issue? I'm hoping to spend $400 on a timing rebuild kit and not 1600+ to fix the trans.

I would clean the MAF and Throttle body. Throw a new fuel filter in it as well.
