Default Is it my transfer case the problem?

I just bought a 2002 crew cab 4x4 for my 15 yr. old son as a fixer-upper. It runs great but will not go into any gear. The man I bought it from says he is 100% sure it is only the transfer case and not the transmission. Before I go and spend a lot of money I want to get some expert opinions. I have a lot of questions about this truck but this is the main problem. Thanks in advance.

The transfer case has nothing to do with the transmission shifting into gear. The transfer case could explode and you will still atleast have rear wheel drive. If you put the truck in drive, and you go nowhere then it is the transmission (assuming you have fluid).

Default Transfer Case

Thanks for the quick reply. Would you propose that I get a new tranny from a junk yard? (Assuming I have fluid in my transmission... I will check first thing in the morning.)

I buy a half a dozen used transmissions from junkyards a month and Ive only been burned a few times. If it is a decent size reputable junkyard lots of time you can purchase an extended warranty.
