Default My ecoboost = kaboom SSI tune

So I would like to share my wonderful experience with you guys. First off, I have been running a 91 tune from SSI for the past 2 months or so. At first the tune Shawn first sent me was throwing a code and causing my truck to go into limp mode. Long story short he made me a "less aggressive" tune and it has been fine since then. (2016 f150 king ranch with now 12000 miles)

so as I was driving home today with one of my friends he was asking me about how my truck has been running as he knew about the prior issues. I told him everything has been good and i punched it to show him how the new tune was.. And boom. My truck started smoking and I could hear the motor shot. Looked under and sure enough there was oil.

i dont want to say it's all the tunes fault butt I hardly get on it and I've had the tune for less than 2000 miles.. Anyway thanks for the tune SSI.

I can enjoy my new king ranch as it sits in my driveway.

Sorry for the rant.. Just not looking forward to paying 10k for a new motor when they tell me the tune voided out the warranty..

mainly posting this so people are smarter than me.. Don't tune a $60,000 truck.

If if anyone has a spare motor that they want to sell me.. Let me
know haha

Might not have been the tune, might have been the tune, hard to say.
Please don't tell me it's at the dealer with the tune still on it. Don't give them ammunition to deny warranty.

Is the tune the only thing you've done to the truck? It could be any number of things if you've made other modifications.

I'm not doubting you, but I'm trying to make sure the full story is told.

Take a sniff of the oil and see if it is saturated with gas. I had a 5* eco tune do that to my 2014, and I quickly removed it and had the oil changed right away, drove 63K miles without an issue. If you do have a strong gas smell, then Ford may contribute it to the tune and will deny. I discovered it after only 200 miles and resolved it in less than 400 miles, so if yours is a gas saturation issue, 2000 miles of diluted oil could very well have caused it.

OTOH it could have just been a bad engine, only a teardown will tell.

Where is the oil coming from? Could be a blown turbo. When a turbo goes, you will smoke, and sometimes they make one hell of a bang. Did the engine seize?

Avoid SSI tunes. Lots of people in F150 Nation have a lot of bad stories.

It did not seize but the noise it made while running after was like all kinds of grinding. I called the dealer and they can't even look till Monday. Hopefully it wasn't the tuner but I feel like no matter what they will say it was haha

Just don't say anything, that's what my guys at my dealer tell me. As long as the tune isn't there when they get it, there likely would be a hard time not covering it.

You can always use Forscan to return the programming to as built after you return the truck to stock with your programmer, no trace of any tune at all. Just like formatting a computer hard drive.
