Bought used from a guy who worked for Ford. All scheduled maint was taken care of by Ford. But the issue here isn't maintenance related stuff really. Sunroof, A/C, wheels. I drive 12 miles a day to work and back 5 days a week.

If you bought the truck used 4 years ago and had 120+k on it and had a horrible life is that the trucks fault? Not pointing fingers or blame but more info may help.

No it isn't. You can't just compare a 4Runner to an F150. They're not just completely different market segments, they're completely different types of vehicles. And for what it's worth, it would be laughable to try and find the same kind of simplicity and reliability in a 2017 4Runner. Have you seen those things? Aside from the TRD Off Road model all the other 4Runners are meant to be large, luxurious SUVs. 7 seats in a 4Runner??? That's what the Sequoia is for, Toyota!

You can't find simplicity so easily in modern trucks. Get a base model work truck and the most complex equipment will be powertrain related, doesn't matter if it's a Silverado, RAM, F150 or Tundra. Get anything more specced out in trim and the whole truck will be a computer on wheels.

The Taco hasn't really stepped up to the plate as it should in the wake of the new Coloranyons from GM. It's still as underpowered as ever. You'd be looking at the Tundra for a F150 replacement, and it's really still the same truck it was back in the early 2000s. The 4.6L is underpowered and the 5.7 is a complete pig that gets 15mpg highway. Reliability? I guess, something something Hilux something something indestructible something something but the Tundra is not a Hilux and neither is the Tacoma.

Apples to apples man. I feel for you with the F150's faults; my previous vehicle was a Ford and even though the 3.5NA is a complete tank, its peripheral parts like the pulley and the rad and the fan were not so durable and in my last year of ownership a bunch of those things crapped out on me at once. The dealership tripped over themselves and replaced a bunch of other perfectly working parts and tried to get me to pay for those. I still came back to Ford not for brand loyalty but because the F150 is a very solid truck.

If you think Toyota will serve you better, by all means go for it. It never hurts to experiment and try. But even the Tundra, agreed by certain people to be the most reliable truck around, has had its fair share of problems, some powertrain related (so much for the "i-Force is the most reliable engine"). Go into it with an open mind but don't expect Toyota to be a knight in shining armor. They've changed as well.

For general reliability, remember the Highlander's (and a billion other Toyota and Lexus sedans) 3.0 v6 woes? Yeah, that one still hurts.

As for the F150, the guy working for Ford doesn't mean a whole lot. You don't know his exact driving habits, where he would take the truck, and how hard he would push it. One can take a truck mudding and give it a good wash and no one would be the wiser.

I find it pretty sad to see everyone backing up Ford on this. A 7 year old vehicle is not that old. I like to keep my cars/trucks until they are 10-12 years old, and typically I only have to replace normal maintenance items during that time. I’ll be very upset if my 2014 starts having these types of issues in 2021, because parts like the sunroof track should easily be able to last that long. The sunroof (and everything else) sure worked great in my 2005 Frontier when I sold it at the end of 2016, and I regularly beat the hell out of that truck off-road!

And TNBass, there’s no reason to NOT compare the quality of an F150 to a 4Runner. Sure, it’d be silly to complain about the power or comfort or handling of an F150 compared to a SUV, but reliability should be universally the same between any Toyota, Ford, Nissan, GM, etc. Sadly, a lot of us know that’s not always the case.

If you like the truck, it might be worth seeing what the cost of parts is and how difficult it would be to do the work yourself. $4,000 is a tough pill to swallow, but $1500 and a couple Saturdays of your time is much easier to deal with.
