Default MPT vs 5 Star

Here soon I'll be looking to purchase a tuner and I'm just curious as to whom yall think I should purchase it from. I'm more or less looking for the best performance gains as better fuel efficiency will just be an added bonus. So my question is, MPT or 5 star? What do you have and what do you recommend? What tune are you running and is there a significant difference between the octanes? Thanks

Don't think you can go wrong either either. 5star through Stage3Motorsports.com gives you lifetime tunes and offers an optional warranty.

It has been very popular.

I have both and I lean towards MPT for one reason only, they set up their custom tunes to allow the tow/haul switch to adjust the shifting for a decent daily driver around town. Sort of like having a touring/sport mode switch.

You cant go wrong with either of them. Don't bother with an eco tune, I and others have found the performance/tow tunes to be the best economy wise.

I can't speak for any of the other tunes, but my 5 star 87 performance/tow makes the truck how it should have came from the factory. From what I read, 5 star doesn't necessarily give you the best power, but it seems to have the best drivability and the easiest to live with for day to day duties.

Do your homework. Their are a lot of different brands of tuners. You can't go wrong purchasing from Stage One....for any of your mods. Like OP said, you also can't go wrong with an 87 tow tune....it's amazing. And if you can keep your foot out if it, the mileage actually increases by 1-2 mpg's. Drive it around for a month or two , than put it back to stock.....you'll trip all over yourself to get it back on! One of the best mods-period. :IMO:

I am also looking into a tune once my warranty is up in a year. Would the 87 tow tune still be the best even if there was little to no towing? MPG and Performance would both be important to me.

Especially since you don't have to replace your plugs to get the added performance with the 87 tow tune....and your always prepared to hook up the trailer.

I have no idea what year his truck is, but if an 11-13, he will want to replace his plugs anyway. That is good to do regardless of custom tune or not!

I strongly recommend researching tuning extensively before making any purchase. This is modifying the engine operation of an expensive-to-replace powerplant. You will also benefit from learning from those who actually understand tuning on this platform. You will know in advance of what is "normal" and what is not.

Whatever you do, make sure you are prepared to data log and make sure you are comfortable that your tuner can make the adjustments that your truck engine will most likely need to operate at peak, safe performance.
