They're one of, if not, the strictest in the states. (Supposedly NY is very comparable).

You will undergo smog every other year.
All aftermarket parts (for engine) will have to have a CARB EO number, good luck finding a catalytic converter that has that without going OEM (though not 100% enforced, it could be a reason to fail the visual portion of smog after they run it and take your money)
Although an item may have an EO number for one model F150, it doesn't mean you can use that on yours unless it's been tested and your specific model and is included in that EO number.
You may be designated to go to a smog station or a smog only station. That will create your vehicles profile that they monitor. If you constantly fail, you'll get redflagged and more "test only" but the upside is you can usually volunteer to retire your car, bad news is that it's usually only a few hundred bucks.

It's either 20 or 25 years old and you can register it as an Antique...once that is done no more smog and you can do whatever you want to it...bring it in from out of state and pay a one time fee...can't remember how much and you get a wavier. Double check me on this...I grew up in Cali but haven't been back for years.

That rule no longer applies, Thanks to Arnold. Diesels (after '98) and any car/truck/suv after '75 need smog.

See if you can register it in another state thats not as strict. I know a few guys here in NY that registered their cars in VT because they wouldnt pass the obd-2 emissions test here.

NY is only a pain with OBD-2. My car is a '92 and has no smog crap or cats and it gets inspected every year.

Doubt you'll be able to buy gas in CA in 4 years.
