yeah I liked the look, and never done ANY painting, or plasti-dipping on anything in my life... so the fact it comes off is probably going to be a good thing since I am guessing it will take me a few tries to get it right.

Any suggestions for painting?

Should I get to 100% coverage on the tape lines first and then fill toward the center?

What part of the process do you take off the masking so that the plasti-dip breaks clean and doesn't peel up?

Just one question, how does the plastidip clean up after a truck wash? I hear that dust and dirt can stick a bit more to it than your regular paint.

Thanks,
Marko
I PlastiDipped my mirror-caps WHITE. White is 10x harder to keep clean than black (so everyone says) and they get bombarded by Mosquitos, lovebugs, dirt, mud, oil, etc on the daily!!! For a quick shine-up, I just spit and use a shirt or towel and that knocks off the big spots.. About once a week, I put my bottle of Simple Green (actually Lowe's knock-off brand) on mist-mode, spray once, and wipe off with a microfiber towel. Bam, brand new. Held up for about 6 months so far. By "held up", I mean I haven't touched it or cleaned it vigorously and it looks identical to the day I dipped it.

Go to www.dipyourcar.com and then Forums. Then, search for Dip Your Car or DYC on YouTube. They have their own channel.. I've never painted, prepped or done anything like that before either.. Came out 10x better than I imagined, and better then some people's dip jobs that use the $100 spray gun, takes 3 hours taping things off, etc.. What are you wanting to dip?? Start with something small/not very noticeable.. My first dip was my mirror caps.. Small, smooth objects that wouldn't be the end of the world if it wasn't a fantastic paint job.. Follow the videos.. Start with 1-2 light "dusting" coats, waiting 10-15 minutes in between. Then another 1-3 quick, light coats, waiting the 10-15 minutes in between. It will start to shape up with how you envisioned it.. End with 2 medium coats (or even light-medium, or just enough to make it look 'wet' and let dry") - That's it.. And if you don't like it.. Wait 30 minutes and peel it off. Back to a clean slate that's probably cleaner than when you started. First step is to clean with soap and water, or a degreaser, let dry, and then hit with some alcohol.. (99% isopropyl alcohol, let dry, and you're ready) - Biggest tip people gave me was to ALWAYS keep the dip can 8-12 inches away from the target, and don't bend your wrist to aim.. Move your whole arm in a sweeping fashion, staying 8-12 inches or so away.. Came out pretty damn smooth...!

Edit: Im sure some more experienced guys will chime in, just thought I'd tell you my experience since I was in same boat as you.. Having never painted anything before!! I also did my grille and grille surround one weekend, came out great, didnt like the look of it and peeled it off in 30 minutes.

The panel was the hardest to do but hopefully this will help. For guidance google Saleen F150 and see the area/s you need to tape off. Once you have taped off the sections. Clean the area real good with a simple green. The first 2 coats should be a light misting/dusting coat. Wait 10-15min between each coat. After the first 2 coats you can start to go a little heavy.

The problem with the tailgate is if you're doing a panel like that. The top and bottom lines don't have any body line breaks like door jams, tailgate jams, etc... for the dip to have a clean natural break.

So the trick is, you want to peel off the tape right after you spray the last coat while the dip is still wet because for some reason when you respray a surface it re liquifies things. Once you sprayed the last coat hit the tape lines with a nice bead of dip and then immediately peel it off. This way it will give you a clean line.

If the lines are not clean PM me and I have another write up to fix the issue.

Hope that made sense.

Edit: I did have access to a gun and pre dip (to wipe off the surface before dipping). So I did not use the rattle can stuff.

Default 2006 tailgate

I will give it a shot, like you said if I don't like it I can peal it off.

I am slightly concerned because the lines for the 2008 and 2006 tailgate are different, so I am not sure how it will look aesthetically.

Let me know if you run into any problems.

What I would do is make the tailgate panel the height of the taillights from top to bottom and call it a day and leave the handle and handle trim the way they are.

Curious to see how this turns out. Was thinking about doing mine so it looked like that. Two tone black. I didn't know how it would look though with there really not being any detail lines like the new body style tailgates have.

Should be fine. I know its not black but it gives you an idea. Plus for some reason couldnt fine any black saleen f150 rear end shots on google.

Edit: I lied.
