well I would say don't put good hard earned money into it. it will look good but not make the truck run any better
I have 241,200 miles on my truck (knock wood never had to touch the inside of it...

I don't have a K&N I don't have to clean it every 15,000 to 20,000 miles I just replace the paper filter every 30,000 miles for around $13 Do the math.

Your environment can play a big role. I put a K&N filter on my BMW motorcycle 39 years ago and still have it. Cleaning only takes a few minutes so I think I'm ahead. I put one in the Ford for longevity, not performance. I've never cleaned it, after maybe 70k miles but this is not a dusty environment here in western WA. If it was apain to clean and it needed it often in dusty conditions I'd probably go with paper.

But, the gains were never what the manufacturer touted. Huh, sorta like now, eh?

Back around the mid 1980's and further back, intake and exhaust work did make a difference, especially with headers, intake and carb. Sometimes a cam would be installed if you were wanting to get full benefit. First thing I always did was get dual exhaust put on, true duals, with either an "H" or "X" pipe. Didn't have to worry about Cats back then. We also didn't realize how bad our exhaust smelled.

Seeing that you have the ecoboost, I'd rip that K&N out asap and throw in a paper filter. The paper may not breath as well, but it's going to do a much better job filtering which is more important with the ecoboost IMO. And being that the truck is boosted, I doubt the added airflow of a K&N helps that much anyway.
I've put an aftermarket CAI or K&N drop in filter in every other vehicle I've owned, but I will not do that for my ecoboost.
