Default Improve MPG Ecoboost F150 2013, 3.73 gears

Hello,

I am new to the forum and want to know if anyone has found ways to improve MPG on the ecoboost engine. I have a 2013 F150 limited, 3.73, 22" rims. The best mpg I have been able to get is 15.3 in the city and 17-18 on the highway driving from Dallas to Houston on I-45, 70mph. I have made the trip 3 times and MPG is the same. I drive it slow on some tanks then drive normal on other tanks and I still get 15mpg in the city. I have 5500 miles and love the truck but for this kind of gas mileage I wish I had a V8. My 2007 Yukon Denali AWD with a 6.2 V8 would get 20mpg on the same trip to Houston so I am disappointed. I have read the threads about people saying they get more MPG out of their trucks with basically the same set up . I want to know if anyone has made any modifications, (chips, programmed the computer, etc?) that has increased MPG?

Also has anyone complained to the dealer which resulted in the dealer changing parts or doing something that actually increased the MPG?

Thanks,
Al

I have a 2013 EcoBoost Screw 4x4 with the 3.73 rear end & I am EASILY making 23-28 mpg on the highway. You are doing something different...

With the heavier rear differential for towing, you COULD put on some even bigger tires as you will have the torque to roll them easily - but it may let more air underneath your truck creating more drag.

I see you have 22" rims on there now - is your truck lifted ? Are you running offroad tires ?

Sounds normal for a loaded truck with 3.73. Remember options = weight=lower mpgs.

But if you want better, slow down. 55 mph is a sweet spot. You might get 20 - 22 mpg. Also, coast to stop signs and lights. Swap tires for lighter ones (this will never pay off).

And ignore the mpg claims of internet posters. The guy above may have seen 28 mpg with a tailwind on a 20 mile stretch but I'd bet he hasn't broken 20 mpg for a tank avg. My best tank avg was 20 mpg and I have a scab with 3.31 rear.

55mph on the interstate in Texas? You trying to get him killed?!?! He's probably getting run over at 70.

We have pretty much the same truck except for the motor. My 6.2 will get 18 mpg at 70. Around town it's more like 12-14.

Also notice Coho is our friendly neighbor to the north, Canada.

So, I am not sure if he is using the Canadian gallon which has more petrol than ours or if he is using KPG.

In short unless you wanted to ruin your truck there aren't many more way to get better mpg.

From easiest to hardest:

-get off the gas and don't accelerate past 2k rpm
-don't fill up with gas that has ethanol
-take roads with speed limits at around 45/50 mph
-run ford approved fluids
-get rid of the tailgate and get a cargo net (PROVEN TO WORK)
-lower the nose of the truck
-tune (may screw the truck up)
-remove the spare (not advised)
-put smaller mirrors on
-put a 3.31 rear end on
-remove running boards all together and all other parasitic drag iteams
-put a giant chin spoiler
-buy that eco-cover thing for the bed that somebody tried to make a while ago
-drop the truck all togethor
-remove the bed all together

And don't trust what the mpg that the truck computer is telling you, calculate it yourself.

Unless my Ford (A Kansas City truck plant made F150) has some weird Canadian conversion on the dash (which it doesn't - its set up from the factory to US Gallons)... One day of around town mileage in some stop & go and some 2ndary highway.

Even if it does calculate in us gallons the instant mpg gauge isn't too accurate. In my '07 I find its off by as much as 10%, only calculations at the pump count.

wasn't instant. that was 100 miles on the reset.

Meh. Was just trying to help. I'll keep it to myself then & just let people figure it for themselves. I've got my truck working and making great MPG the way I run it.
