How upside am I? Depreciation question.
2018 XLT crew cab, 4X4
Lead foot special edition
302A / power equipment group
moon roof
bedliner/cover

extended tank

Pretty much a loaded XLT. MSRP was 55,500, I paid 43,000.
I'm just genuinely curious how upside I will be if I decide to dump it and move on to something else. I see some 2016-2017 holding their value pretty well, but I've also been told to expect around 33,000 on a trade. Call me naive but I didn't think the hit would be 20,000.
Thoughts?

So you are right, it wouldn’t be $20,000.

This is a question that can't, should not be answered on a forum. There are many variables, one is location. Your surrounding area really dictates how much your truck is worth. People on a public forum, in different areas are going to give you answers you like, and don't like. I would do your research at local dealers and put out a feeler on a car sales website.
Good luck, hope you keep what you want.

OP, there are so many resources available online that will take into account your location and all variables.....that is where you'll get the most accurate info.
KBB, Edmunds, Autotrader, etc.

Dealerships aren't stupid, they know that MSRP doesn't mean anything when it comes to trucks. They also know most buyers aren't going to pay more for a used truck than they can buy a new one for.
Kelly Blue book will give you a general idea what to expect on a trade in. If you want a better answer take your truck to a Carmax, they'll look it over and give you a price within 10 minutes.

According to KBB that truck is worth $29,400 trade value in my zip code. 68% of what you paid. About $34,000 if you sell it yourself. 79% of what you paid On a car lot it would sell for about $36,000, 85% of what you paid. That is actually holding it's value pretty good compared to most vehicles. But it could be much different where you live.
You've gotta keep one a while to not lose big time. Any time you sell or trade within 5 years you lose a lot. But I've seen lots of 10 year old 150,000 mile trucks sell for over 50% of the initial cost. I've seen insurance companies give some one almost 60% of what they actually paid on a 10 year old truck.

You're upside down! The value will be around $33k. I was shocked to find that my $52k MSRP truck, with less than 2k miles, was priced at $32k, for a reduction of $20k, based on MSRP. Now, I took a 2015 and optioned it up the same as mine, added 40k miles and KBB came back at the same $32k. So, what that tells me is that the truck takes it's largest hit immediately and maintains that value for up to 3 years.
For all of those that say that KBB and other pricing catalogs know that the $52k MSRP truck can be bought for $41k, so the actual value loss is only $9k, is only true on the F150. A 2018 GMC Sierra SLT, with a lot of options, has an MSRP of $53k and can be bought for $41k, but KBB says it's worth $44k. These are trade in values and not private party pricing.
