Before I got my 2013 4wd I had a 2011 2wd and drove it through 2 Canadian winters with NO ISSUES. I only got it properly stuck once and all I had to do was rock it for about 15 seconds and out she came. Proper tires make all the difference, I put snows on that truck every year and just made sure I didn't drive like an idiot. The traction control system was a big help as well.
I will be putting the same snow tires on my new truck, just cause its a 4x4 doesn't mean snow tires won't help when turning / stopping.
Good Winter Driving = Good Tires + Lots of following distance + Plenty of room to stop and a BIG dose of common sense.
PS. The big reason I traded my 2wd wasn't because of winter driving at all.
