Default How to: painted oval emblems, new 3D style!!

Okay all, I will share a secret. Ford now has what they are calling "3D style" ovals, and with a little work, they are super easy to take apart and paint. Here is what I did. I got a new oval, 7" size from a ebay seller (they have 9" now as well, but I think just those 2 sizes). May do the 9" next!!

Once you turn the emblem over, you have to pretty much break as much blue stuff off, but be very careful. I use a combination of a pair of pliers to "pinch" the round areas off. I also used a razor blade on the smaller outer ring tabs. The middle of the "d" had to be broke out as a piece of its own, no getting around this.

Next step was scuffing everything and using a light coat of primer, followed by some Duplicolor E4 Vermillion and duplicolor black. I then baked the pieces for 20 minutes @ 180. This really gave the paint a smooth, glossy look!

After it cooled and was able to be handled, it all snaps back together. I had some issue with the outer ring, so I took a drill bit and reamed out the holes on the main oval that the outer ring tabs sit in. After it was all together, I hot glued around all of the areas that had to be removed to separate the pieces. Here is the finished product! I will post installed pics tomorrow. Any questions just ask.

I did the exact same thing with mine and it works great and is much cheaper than buying them already painted for you.

Here is the seller I used, they were $14.99. If you search "3D ford oval" or "new style ford oval" you will find them on ebay. He has tons of 9" ones in the same style.

Depending on the year of your truck you may already have that type of emblem. I believe the 13 and 14's come with them but you'd have to remove the emblem to know for sure.

Yeah, but mine is an 07....When I bought my 07 Expedition last year, they had one on the grill, since those were so prone to sun fade. Someone replaced it with the new style.

I gotcha. I just wanted to throw that out there so someone who has that year truck can check before buying just in case.

I got a can from automotivetouchup.com but I used it for more than just the emblems. It was a perfect match to my trucks color.
